I had some email contact with Jeremy Montagu who knew David Munrow but was "hyper-critical" of him. He indicated that he would only "speak out" if other people revealed the latters "faults". His last email comment was that David Munrow was "..commercially, artistically, and intellectually dishonest..." without giving any specific examples ofcourse. However, unlike most if not all the other pioneers (including Greenberg), Munrow was the man who REALLY put early music on the map...
....However, it is true that Munrow did have "faults" such as his "unscholarly." and "show biz" approach. Arguably, he did "overuse" folk instruments from his collection, and also that he, and his Consort on occasion used in part, or in full non-period instruments. But again it should be stated that Munrow put early music on the map.
Lastly, I should add that Jeremy Montagus book on early instruments appeared in 1976 at the sametime as Munrows publication. I wonder which one sold best!?
