TV References....

This maybe of interest.

There is also some reference to the Granada TV series entitled Early Musical Instruments in the above link. The original title of it was going to be "What did they all sound like?"

Cut, and paste  "highlight" from the link...

'ITV / Music in the Round'  DM/6/1  [c1970]

'Music from Great Houses - Montacute'  DM/6/2  [c1972]

'Dutch Television: Eurovision Xmas Programme'  DM/6/3  [c1973]

'Kriwaczek - music and spare scripts'  DM/6/4  [1974]

Nice find, PiedPiper.  Is there a chance that any (or better yet, all) of these programs might appear on a DVD?  (hint hint)

Until now, I did not know that David Munrow appeared in programs other than his Early Musical Instruments (which I've seen) and Ancestral Voices (which I've not seen) series!

Thank you for your response.

Yes, I have talked to David Griffiths about the possibility of Ancestral Voices being released on dvd like Early Musical Instruments (for which he was ofcourse reponsible in producing as opposed to some big corporation!!). However, the copyright fee to do this maybe more expensive than the latter.

Ancestral Voices was a BBC 2 production which I remember seeing in 1976 in Windsor where I used to live. It is not as informative as Early Musical Instruments. Moreover, one gets the distinct impression that Munrow appears "exhausted" at times, and ofcourse, he was under pressure as he was a workaholic par excellence...

Anyway, to follow on to what was said. I have not traced the Music in the Round entitled  A Consort of Crumhorns. It may have been wiped, or lost.

I may have seen the Montecute programme possibly either in full, or in part but it was a long time ago. It maybe the same programme in which Munrow,et al appeared with blue polar neck "sweaters". But I seem to recall rightly, or wrongly that this may have been an Open University production.

Ah, thanks for explaining why Ancestral Voices has not been released on DVD.  Despite its apparent drawbacks, I'd still like to see the series.  I'd also like to see the other programs you'd mentioned.  I think a compilation of the series and programs on a single DVD would be fabulous!

On a similar note, is there any chance that a best-of compilation CD of Pied Piper radio programs could be made available?  I doubt that Pied Piper was ever broadcast here in the U.S., although I've heard and read much praise regarding the program.

I think David Munrow, engaging and charismatic born teacher that he was, had an uncanny ability to make the most boring or esoteric subjects sound fun and interesting.  I've learned a lot about early music and European history through, and because of, him.  No one has managed to take his place.

Thank you for your response. However, it is very difficult to trace the present copyright holders of Music in the Round, and the Music from the Great Houses--Montecute. I have had no time, or interest at present to do this but since you are clearly a dab hand on the internet, and if you are not too busy you could possibly help, and contact me publicly, or privately. And it must be remembered that the relevant recordings above may no longer exist.

As for the Pied Piper radio programmes it would obviously be easy to trace the copyright holders. Whether a selection from them is feasible commercially is hard to say but as far as I understand it Early Musical Instruments has been selling well. As with virtually everything in the world it all comes back to money, and capitalism (ie. supply, and demand)!

I may, or may not be in contact with David Griffiths on the phone fairly soon. I have met him once when he was delivering early musical instruments to customers in the north, and south of England. I saw him in Windsor which ofcourse is full of history.
